The Editing Process At The Moment ...

Stages Of Editing

1. Logging

The dailies or rushes are sorted and labelled in ‘bins’. Each take can contain extra notes from the director or the cinematographer. This is the first time the editor sees the film, and since it is shot out of sequence, it is out of context of the story. A good editor views the rushes and looks for fluidity of movement and nuances that will later be incorporated into the film.

2. First Assembly

The editor considers all the visual and audio material collected on the shoot for each scene and then re-orders it in the way to tell the story best.

In the scene above, the editor may decide to open with an aerial shot of Central London and then track in to Buckingham Palace. The next shot might be a closeup of the hands followed by a dissolve shot to the hands of the hobo playing the banjo. There are dozens of possible combinations the editor can chose for this one simple sequence, each of which create a different mood and tell a different story.

Editing on a large budget feature usually commences as soon as the film starts shooting. An editor will work on the rushes and assemble scenes for the director and producer to view. Often at this point the editor and director will decide that additional footage of key moments is necessary in order to make more editing choices available during the edit.

Hint: First assembly is like a sketch of the finished scene.
It is a good idea to save these sketches for reference later,
should the editor get stuck.

3. Rough Cut and Variations

The rough cut can take up to three months to complete. Each editor works differently. Sometimes the editor works alone and shows the day or weeks work to the director and producer, Sometimes the editor and director work together, discussing every nuance.

In the rough cut, the scenes are placed in order and checked for continuity. This all-important step in the editing process allows for revisions and new ideas to be tried and tested.

Hint: Make the edit points between the scenes very obvious in order to e mphasise the ‘roughness’. Failure to do so may result in the editor committing to an edit before it is ready.

4. First Cut

The first cut is the rough cut that is accepted by the editor, the director and the producer. Selection and sequence are basically fixed, although changes can still be made. The later film is visible. Detailed fine cut starts out from its proportions, structures, rhythms and emphasises them.

Hint: Never be afraid to let the first cut ‘rest’ for a few days so everyone involved can see it with fresh eyes.

5. Fine Cut

The fine cut no longer focuses on the entire film, but on the details of each and every cut. The fine cut emphasises and strengthens the rhythms and structures identified in the first cut.

6. Final Cut

When a fine cut has been agreed with the editor, director and producer, the sound designer, music composer and title designer join the editor. Sound effects and music are created and added to the final cut. When everyone has agreed with the final cut, the Edit Decision List is sent to the lab where a negative cutter ‘conforms’ the negative to the EDL in order to create a negative that is an exact copy of the final cut.

Currently In The Process of Editing My Footage

One of the most common problems with editing amateur video is shaky, handheld footage. One of the best ways to smooth out shaky shots is to add a strobe effect when you edit. To create this effect, add a strobe filter (called "Posterize Time" in Adobe Premiere 6.0) in your editing program, or run your footage through an external time base corrector (TBC) with a strobe feature. The strobe essentially holds some frames on the screen longer and skips over others. This reduces the impact of the jarring shakes and creates an artsy effect. Often, the shakier the raw footage, the better it looks when strobed. This works extremely well when editing montages and highlights set to music. So, don't throw away that shaky footage. Strobe it and use it to create a cool music montage.

Parts Of The Sequence

When editing we encountered some colour problem. You might find that a submitted video had an improper white balance. While many camcorders default to an automatic color balance mode, others require that the user select an indoor or outdoor mode or set the white balance manually. Outdoor shots recorded with an indoor white balance setting will produce images with a strong blue tone. Indoor shots recorded with the camera on an outdoor setting will produce images that are toned overly red. Some camcorders have a difficult time recording accurate colors under fluorescent or mercury vapor lights, skewing the color quality.

Feedback From The First Pitch...N01
After having to pitches one which was a documentary and the other a drama my lecturers gave us their opinions and which traffic light indicated it was a piece well worth taking further action for in the production process. Nadine had stated as far as she knew, since the last pitch she had and the feedback we received from Roddy, she had to go back to Jazzy band group that she decided to work on and gather further information that will grab the audience is attention.

What is happening now is that, we have to re-pitch the idea again this time and what we did was met up with the guy who Nadine wanted to focus on and we decided on a few interesting stories about him which she will be putting together and ready for the pitch on Wednesday or Friday.

The Pitch Was About A Day In The Life Of R.S.M Squad.
Not many people love to hear the word of God, mostly because it sounds boring and out of tune to their daily living. But a music band has made this possible to get the message across. Not only hearing of the word through its lyrics but also believing it and it is express through music and in the form of Soul, RnB, Hip Hop, etc., an everyday music that everyone listens to. This makes it easy getting the message across and even though not everyone likes to hear about God, but with the genre of music, they will listen to it more.

Meanwhile,I was working of the story of my drama which features two best friend, one is at war and they fall into an issue of love with a woman caught in between them. Roddy suggested we have a sort of twist to the drama so it not predictable and the audience are engaged on whats happening. In this case i decided to change the name to WAR>LOVE>GUILT because two friends form a bond which is developed through out the drama and are guilty that they share an intense moment and later see the shadows of their dead best friend appear.

BLACK MAGIC TUTORIAL WOW THIS CAMERA IS AMAZING!

The timeless beauty of feature film quality to your production work! The Black Magic Camera is the latest digital cinema camera packed with a high resolution sensor and wide dynamic ranges for independent filming. At the tutorial I was told that it is the first camera to include built in metadata entry so files include information that is compatible with popular editing software. You just simply tap the screen to display the slate were you can enter information such as the shot number of your production.

The Black Magic Camera captivates a super wider dynamic range of 13 stops into 12-bit DNG files so that images genuinely look cinematic. The camera handles indoor shots while keeping the details of any images captured through windows. This means you keep all sensor data so you can make creative decisions during DaVinci Resolve color grading.

The camera also comes in two models, depending on the lens mount you want. Therefore, you can use the most amazing optics from the worlds leading lens crafters. With the Black Magic Cinema Camera you are not locked into any specific lens and you can choose the lens you need based on the creative style of your shot.

An amazing ultra scope is also included which gives you technically accurate scopes on any computer connected by Thunderbolt. The Black Magic also uses standard connections. Whilst conducting my final project I was going to use this to film but was not able due to the loan store being over booked. Therefore, I had to film with a Canon D7 which was not to bad thank god for the location.

HAVE FUN WITH THE CAMERA !!!! =D ITS LOOKS LIKE A WORK OF ART AND WORKS LIKE ONE TOO!

WORK EXPERIENCE

Job purpose and reason for working in a media classroom

Working at Leyton Sixth Form College I was given the initiative to support student progression in a media class, under the direction of a line manager by being involved in students educational, social and development curriculum and contributing in its expansion as a member of a team. This work experience will give me a chance to see if working in a classroom would enhance my ability to communicate with young people and explain how media plays a significant role in everyday modern life. I thought that this would be a good occasion to contribute in a learning environment that involves agendas of my study. Also, this will prepare me to develop an understanding of how we perceive the world by teaching students the importance of the media as well as train to become a media teacher

Whilst at Leyton Sixth Form College I was able to hold a cake sale twice for funding my short Drama. Everyone around me was kind and supportive. (Lieberman & Miller, 1999) pointed out that the practice of reflective teaching, reflective inquiry, and reflection-on practice, results in gaining of the personal and professional knowledge that is so important to being an effective teacher and in shaping children's learning. In this case being able to ask ‘what’ and ‘why’ questions give certain powers to individuals as they are concerned about their learning outcomes and transformations of what they learn in an everyday classroom life.

This experience has successfully permitted me to progress my communication skills and meeting the needs of student learning.
